We're having closets and a laundry area re-configured so my place is a wreck right now. I try to clean up the work area every night, thinking the less dust and debris around, the less that will be tracked through the house. I asked the sheet rock installer when he would start sanding (so I could be prepared).

"Oh, I don't sand, " he said.

So, I'm thinking, 'Ugh. Gotta get another person to finish his job.' Until he added...

"I sponge. With a damp sponge. Makes much less mess."

I'm thinking a big ole kiss on the mouth might be in order.

I waffle between sophisticated and casual for a kitchen. The plain door fronts and mixed hardware on these light gray cabinets really feel cozy. Toss in the art and the marble, and, well, I'm done.

Don't know what this particular cabinet color is, but it's similar to BM Gray Owl (OC-52), which I have kinda picked as the cabinet color for my eventual kitchen over haul.

When we travelled to Rome a few years ago, we saw many wonderful sights, but nothing we saw was more moving than this prayer-covered statue.

I don't remember exactly where it's located because I forgot to write it down.

The breath-taking sight of all the hopes and wishes of so many unknown folks is one of my most treasured memories from our trip.

I am thankful for each of you; for your visits and comments.

For the past few days I have been immersed in preparing for a presentation about famous portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz. I didn't realize that she has also photographed landscapes and interiors for her new book Pilgrimage. I loved this photo of the bedroom of writer Virginia Woolf. It's so utilitarian and spare, and with the blue cast, so moody and beautiful.

first look: my master bath vanity

I caught the sun making some nice shadows on my "new" master bath vanity yesterday, so I snapped a few quick shots. I found an old, gray-painted french piece at Scott's Antique Market in Atlanta last fall and had it converted to hold two sinks. (My plumbing contractor may never speak to me again.) I knew I wanted to have something old as an anchor in the new bathroom, and this piece really suits our 1940's home. We added a calcutta gold marble top and I was super happy that we could place the slab so that a large gray vein ran right between the sinks.

It's been a long haul but we are finally finished. I need to do a few more things, then I'll post more photos.

Until then, you'll find me here. In my new bathroom. I may never come back out.

I love reading and commenting on your blogs. I have been so frustrated lately with a Blogger commenting problem that is keeping me from commenting on many blogs. After doing a little digging, I found this recent Blogger notice:

Many times lately, I have tried to leave comments on several blogs but have not been able to sign in. It's nothing you have done; it's a Blogger problem. If you are using the embedded comment form, please consider switching to the pop-up comment form to allow for more comments.

(You should see the steam coming out of my ears after I type a lengthy comment to an awesome post, but then I am unable to publish the comment and it's lost...!)

If I am unable to comment, there are surely others out there who are having the same problem. I hope this helps. I really miss being a part of your conversations!

One, you guys are the best. Thanks a million for your advice about my old pine doors. Most of you said keep the paint on, which was my first thought, too. But a good many of you said the paint definitely needs to go. I think the best suggestions were to hang the doors, live with them awhile, then decide. Your comments brought home the fact that the paint remnants look more rustic and cottage-y while the stripped doors look more refined, sophisticated. Thanks for helping me crystalize that thought.

It had been too long since I visited my good friends Bill and Barry at Antiques on Augusta in Greenville, SC. Those guys are amazing. I took a couple of quick shots recently of one special little corner. Bill and Barry commissioned a local artist to paint a few large canvases for a design project last year. Now they are in the shop on display. Awesome dark and moody colors in a scene depicting the low country south; and so dramatic looking in this corner. And that linen-covered custom headboard with oversized nail heads?

I may move in.

along with my master bath re-do (still going on, folks...) we're changing it up in our bedroom. I had taken down our bi-fold closet doors to replace them with new solid paneled doors. Then we lucked up on these at a salvage yard...

Just when I thought we'd never find what we wanted - there they were. And the pair was less than the cost of one new door. I'm crazy about the outline of the old handle hardware - one oval and one rectangle.

Now, my dilemma. I kinda like a little paint still on. What's a girl to do...keep the paint or take it off entirely?

Do you love a good antiques auction? When I dealt in antiques, I used to go to auctions all the time. I absolutely loved the hunt. Here's how it usually went down:

The preview: walk around and check it all out. Is there something here to snap up at a good price then resell? Is there something here that I just have to have for myself ?(the real reason for being here, after all.)

The crowd: who else is here? other dealers? friends? who is looking at what?

The wait: sit toward the back and watch the bidding. when that great thing comes up, bid just before the auctioneer cries "sold!" If you still have competition, re-bid fast like you're never gonna stop....(although sometimes you have to!)

I often had butterflies, especially over bidding on items I knew I wasn't likely to see again soon. And the adrenalin rush that came when I got a great piece for a song kept me coming back.

I've gotten some good things at antiques auctions through the years and I've recently started going again, just for fun. I'm a penny-pincher, so I've never spent a fortune on pieces but I've also never regretted any auction purchase I've made. I've only regretted the ones I didn't make.

I am absolutely nuts over this New Orleans home, rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina and stylishly refurnished with an amazingly small amount of money.

Karina Gentinetta painted several antique pieces in her home, including the secretary above, Ralph Lauren Tudric Pewter.

The french-style headboard, above, which Karina had made then upholstered herself, is also painted Tudric Pewter.

a little progress in our master bath

We are slowly coming along. I am in love with my calcutta gold marble shower floor. Last fall, I found a great vintage french chest at Scott's Antique Market in Atlanta which will be made into the vanity. Here are two drawers from the chest. I really like the pulls and the sweet blue and cream paper lining. Our home was built in the early 1940's so having an older piece in the new bathroom is going to give the feel I want.

Not much else to show right now. Did I mention progress was slow?

Now I just need to choose a gray for the walls.....that should be easy, right????

Houston, Texas designer Sally Wheat recently took a little time to pass on to "a perfect gray" readers some of her favorite grays. And folks, we are not alone here in trying to sort out our gray hues, "I think grays are really hard," says Sally. "I've had a gray work beautifully in one end of a space and turn out completely blue on the other end!"

Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Here are a few of Sally's favorite grays, "I have had good luck with these," she says...

"...a nice light gray for walls," Sally notes.

is Sally's pick for a darker shade of gray.

Martin Senour Cindersmoke, above, "a nice dove gray."
