these moody rooms....

Love the dark and shadowy vibe in these two images from S. R. Gambrel. If I could just find a secret portal, I'd slip right in there. But, help me on this one. The mantle? It's always the hardest thing for me to get right. One larger art piece or several smaller ones? Which do you prefer in these images...?

I prefer the one large painting and smaller objects. The other mantle is distracting. Beautiful room...

Is it the same room with the image flipped? I like the bigger piece of artwork in this case.

So very partial to larger art over a mantle...a real statement piece..or an antique mirror...I know you know some great ones!

In this space I love the one large one, it grounds the space and works better with the fireplace...to my eye! Very moody indeed! Janell

I love one showstopping piece over the mantel! Love Mr. Gambrel, too!

It's kind of sexy right? I like them both but the second feels more simplistic.

I'm all about simple & clean, and love 1 piece on the space above, and then an interchangeable collection of goodness that changes with the mood/season/alignment of the stars on the mantel below.

Also, on the Bali Hai, absolutely gray on one of the tall pieces -- is there one in particular you love? I was thinking maybe Farrow & Ball's Mouse's Back in full gloss...

Wow, Ive never seen this room in the dark like this... its super sexy and moody... I think I like the smaller ones only cause the big one could be bigger.

I like one big piece. I want it to catch your eye where smaller pieces don't usually make as much of a statement. At least for mantles that's how I feel. Love these rooms too!

I love these moody rooms. It's almost like living in the blue hour all the time. I like a single big piece of art or a large framed hanging mirror with smaller artwork in front for the mantle.

Thanks for all your lovely comments and for the links here. xoxo Amy

It really depends on the look you're after, doesn't it? I mean, the single painting flanked by lamps is traditional, symmetrical and orderly. The collage approach is more eclectic, although I think the dark frames and subject matters are a bit heavy-handed and make the space more somber than moody.

Me, I'm a traditional sort of fella - give me classic spiffied up and I'm all smiles. (Saves on the redecorating budget too!). So my vote? #1.

I like the first image but with the second mantel. The colours are fantastic!

Oh what a find! I've just jumped in here from If the Lampshade, and find myself in lagoons of beautiful moody colours.

Diggin' those moody blue rooms!
As for the mantle, I think spare is the way to go, at least for this room.

Oh these are moody and beautiful. I like both but I think one large piece is easier to pull off.
