Antique and Modern...

I'm just crazy about this old/new combination.
A crisp contemporary watercolor by Liz Ward above an antique
console with ornate french candelabra.
From the new Lonny.

Have a great weekend!

hanging art on the bookcase

I just can't decide how I feel about it...

auction obsessions

This antique French cabinet would be happily at home at my place,
just under the new flatscreen.
If only I could make it to the auction this weekend.

But I can't.

Isn't it great? With it's mellow patina and it's 38 x 94 x 16 self.
Where else in the world am I going to find that perfection?

And I really want these two abstracts.
Badly.

They are going as a lot of two.

I'm just out of luck this go-round.

If you're anywhere near western North Carolina, you really should check out

We were there for an auction a few months ago.
Awesome stuff.

Andrew Brunk, on the right, often appraises items for
Antiques Roadshow.

He ain't so bad either.

sepia tone photographs

I really like the quirky art and black and white photography in Jordan Ferney's small NYC apartment.
Seeing it makes me want a huge, quirky sepia-toned photo as a statement piece.

...a few cool pieces from Art.com...

The Art of Kiki Slaughter

Well, look what she's gone and done now.
She's mixing furniture with art.
The bench above is great - upholstered in a paint-spattered canvas. Maybe it's her actual drop cloth.
But those chairs.
Man, those vintage, french-style gray chairs with those blue/green
paint spattered seats.

I love her new direction.

what would I do with a few matisse drawings...?

Let's see.
Should they go here...?

...on a sophisticated white wall?

Or,

Here? In a cozy, dark den/dining area...?

Decisions, decisions.

more black and white abstract art

because I totally love it.
and you should, too.

black and white art

My love affair with black and white is well documented; you might even say I'm very pinterested in it. Especially black and white art pieces.

I read decorating advice recently (now, where did I see that?) that we should try to have original pieces, those that we can afford, at least, or create art ourselves -  rather than buy repros or prints.

Do you create your own art?

I just found these big pieces on 1st Dibs by antique dealer Karina Gentinetta. The paintings are bold, fun and are unmistakable references to the work of Franz Kline. Gotta love that scribbled drop cloth, too.

I can just see one of these paintings above an antique french chest.

Does it make you want to re-create a masterpiece yourself?

artists' palettes: welcome back, sissy!

Today I'm celebrating the return of one of my favorite bloggers,
welcome back, sissy - we missed you.

(sissy is into vintage artists' palettes right now. hope you like these, too...)

large, statement art

Above the bed, a vintage photo of Edie Sedgwick, 'muse' to Andy Warhol,
and the ultimate NYC party girl during the '60s.

It's not just the neutrals that I like in the bedroom of  Michael Leva's NYC apartment, as recently published in Elle Decor. I was also struck by that oversize black and white photo of Edie Sedgwick.
I like how the photograph dominates the room and really is the statement piece there.

abstract art and an antique

image from My Notting Hill

I hadn't even opened my new Southern Living when I spotted this image from the recent magazine on Michelle's blog My Notting Hill.

I flipped for that great piece of abstract art by Charlottesville, Virginia artist Kiki Slaughter. Paired with the antique console, the art really shines.

I just had to see a few more pieces from Kiki's site:

rain dance

haze

azure

Yummy, huh? Any one of these would look terrific over an antique piece.
