Remember when I went ga-ga over this black and white striped art piece this spring? Well, no, I haven't made my own yet. But, I promise, I am going to.
Recently I saw this piece in Andy and Kate Spade's living room.
It's the same kind of look, don't you think? A basic shape (what's more simple than a stripe or a circle...?) in black and white. For me, I'm sticking to the stripes, but doesn't this piece add a casual, edgy ease to an otherwise (fairly) traditional space?

I love those stripes. I can't wait to see your version.
Love both pieces of artwork and would be fabulous in my traditional interior to give it some edge. Perhaps we should have a stripe-painting canvas party? Happy week. XO
Donna...show us when you do it. I chuckle when I think of doing art because I tried some this summer and it looked so bad it shocked me. I mean shouldn't a designer be able to pull something like this off??? Ha Ha...not me!
I love the stripes the most. The circle reminds me of a scary movie! Hmmm...what was the name of that movie? Anyway, I can't wait to see your version!
Have a great Monday!
Ha! LOVE these...so you haven't made yours yet, but I am suddenly inspired to paint one myself!

I truly believe artwork is the way to balance out the look of a room. The stripe piece has always been one of my favorites!
Not to be disrespectful to the artist but this looks like an awesome DIY art project. Simplicity is chic!!
I know Donna sometimes a simple design in art is so striking!

Beautiful. Love the black and white and I prefer the stripe also.
Have a nice day, Donna.

Love the contrast! The juxtaposition of contemporary art with more traditional design elements always looks just right to me.
hi Donna! I adore the Spade's living room- like you said, tradional yet with an edge! I see why you love the stripes!

YES! So entirely with you...love both pieces!
You're right... the second room has the same casual feel in black and white as the first room with the stripes. I really love both looks- I think the black "circle" shape works really well over the fireplace b/c it gives your eye a place to rest, while the b&w stripes work better on a side wall... interesting! Thanks for sharing! Can't wait to see your take on the striped piece!

I saw something almost the same on another blog, black and white, and love the simple design too. Go for it make your own we would love to see.
You are right: these simple shapes add great dimension to the two rooms. Love the stripes and the circle options - can't decide on a fave!
I have also been admiring that piece in Kate and Andy's home. You do the stripes and I'll do the giant dot..
They are the type that my husband always says..."I could do that", and "I think I might have to become an artist" or "why don't we give the kids a paintbrush??? but I am a fan and have always liked the simple shapes....maybe I will have to put him up to the challenge:) I think he will find it is much harder than he thinks:)
It definitely adds an 'edge' but I'm with you - I prefer the stripes.
Love it. Imagine the room without it - just not as exciting. So, can't wait to see your version!
Yes! How many times have I reminded you?! Finally!!! I am waving with the flag!
Super fun!
Love to you.

Yes they both have that lovely graphic edge. Why not make a duet? Would look great in the same room.. you can call it your 'black'n'white phase'..! :)
Love from Sydney

I love them both!
I love both of them. And I'm with you - make them yourself and enjoy the boon of having your own artwork displayed in your home!
They are very similar. I love the whimsy in both rooms. It just catches my eye!

I really like it...the Spade's have the BEST taste. I really love the striped one too.
Love them both, but the circle really has me. And how amazing is that fireplace?!
oh my yes! I did a shape piece for my dining room to add that modern detail, love what it did to my space.
You can have your cake and eat it too! See this link below:

It's amazing how they are such bold and strong pieces yet they compliment the rooms beautifully...can't wait to one day see your masterpiece!

I'm of the firm belief that an otherwise ho-hum room can be incredible with a show-stopper piece of art. I figure if I can't have all the amazing furnishings I crave, then perhaps if I splurge on a giant piece of art, everything else will just fade away!
Yes! I love that--you have such a good eye.
hope I'm not commenting twice! I love this look Donna.
Yup. I love simple abstract scratchy black. Very DIYable.
Yes - very similar concept. Love the Spade's very eclectic home - I guess it would be classified as traditional - but it's quirkier than than - I wouldn't be surprised to see really anything thrown in there.
yeah...'cept I am dying to write some pithy little quote in the middle of that circle!
Thinking I wouldn't be invited over.
You can so make this painting. I know you can come up with something similar and cool. You can do it!

the stripes are cool.
the circle looks like the girl from 'the ring' would crawl out all wet, gray and dead and then suck your ass back inside the circle. just like that, murdered.
I just made a few black and white pieces you would like... they are in my etsy shop:
