antique wallpaper rollers

House Beautiful

I'm a big chinoiserie fan, so I really liked this bedroom featured in the latest issue of House Beautiful. The nightstand and the Chinese screens (hung upside down) are really working for me.  How do you like those lamps made from antique wallpaper rollers? I think they're a great look with the chinoiserie vibe.
I did a little looking around online.....

...and I found these locally at Antiques on Augusta in Greenville, SC. This shop is really the best in the area for unique antiques. These lamps are offered by McElreath/Bates, dealers and designers.  I consider these guys my style and design gurus.

I love how the "top" plate is prominent on this one...

...and that the two lamps are not a matched pair - much more interesting that way...

(don't even get me started on that fabulous pair of antique stone lions)

I was glad to see this pair of lamps in person. If you are local, I'd recommend a stop at Antiques on Augusta. If you are not local, this shop totally worth the trip.

I've never seen old wall paper rollers, much less used as lamp bases. Very cool!

I bought one from my favorite shop LOOT years ago and didn't know what it was at the time. Now I'm so inspired to find another one and make a pair of lamps to go on the dresser with the Asian art piece in my bedroom that I just posted under Rock On! Thanks Donna for this most perfect post :)

I have seen these lamps before, and I always think they are so clever and cool...but if I owned one, I would be so tempted to...you know, roll it in paint, across a big sheet of paper!

Love the close up view...so interesting. The echo of age old design passions behind these artifacts. The workers, the patrons, the ladies having coffee in a room decorated with wallpaper created by these antique rollers. Wow. Thanks! Trish

The detail on those lamp bases is incredible, I'm glad you posted close-up images detailing the plates you tend to miss it at first glance. You have inspired me to go exploring..we have quite a few antique shops in neighbouring villages and I also want to spend more time looking for unique bits in architectural salvage yards - they have amazing pieces there!

What a great idea, Donna! I guess I have seen it before, but never really processed it. Now did you end up getting any lamps or will you be making any yourself out of antique rolls? I bet you can find some on ebay.

And what happened w. your art project (b/w stripes)? I am dying to see it!

Happy weekend, dear friend.
