peace...

via Paonote

I lost my father this week. As I sat with him the day before he died, he kept glancing around the room. 'What'er you lookin' for?' I kidded him.
He grinned slyly and said, 'Peace.'

He had a wonderful sense of humor.

I'm signing off for a while.

I adore each of you.

My wish for you is a holiday filled with the ones you love.

And peace.

My love, Donna

I'm so sorry to hear about your father's passing. I felt the need to respond because even though I'm all grown up my wonderful father of 74 years helped me to negotiate the buying of a new car after the old one gave up. As a single parent with a full time job his help was absolutely wonderful. I find as I grow older I cherish every moment I spend with both my parents. I'm glad you have fond memories as well. That will never go away.

i am sure my grams and brock's are all meeting with your dad in heaven as we speak... they will surely live it up... they are all treasures...

never thought I was a "daddy's girl" until he and I got in the short rows - I was his caretaker the last year and a half he lived, and never would've had him to myself that much except for a horrible illness
his last night was a blessing directly from God - tuned the radio, trying to find something interesting, and found a baseball game between a Texas team and a Tulsa team! he grew up in Sapulpa, OK, and took me and my 3 brothers to many a baseball game
got the call he had passed just as I got home - had told him I was going to check on my son, then come back - told him what a great job he'd done as a man, and that if he had to leave before I got back we would all see each other in Heaven - he must've left with the angels as I was driving home!
God bless you - mourn at your ease, as there will never be anyone like your father

Dear sweet Donna. My heart goes out to you. I'm so sorry for your loss. I am very touched by what you wrote.

He's found peace, and I hope that brings you some peace. I'm sending you much love.

I'd like to share this poem with you. Written by Emily Dickinson. I read it at my beloved grandmother's memorial, not too long ago...

If you were coming in the fall,
I'd brush the summer by
With half a smile and half a spurn,
As housewives do a fly.

If I could see you in a year,
I'd wind the months in balls,
And put them each in separate drawers,
Until their time befalls.

If only centuries delayed,
I'd count them on my hand,
Subtracting till my fingers dropped
Into Van Dieman's land.

If certain, when this life is out,
That yours and mine should be,
I'd toss it yonder like a rind,
And taste eternity.

But now, all ignorant of the length
Of time's uncertain wing,
It goads me, like a goblin bee,
That will not state its sting.

xoxo

So sorry for your loss. My mom passed September 8th and I had no idea what it felt like to lose a parent before that moment. Wow, my outlook on life has changed. This poem of a person's "dash" moved me. Enjoy!

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end
He noted that first came the date of her birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years
For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not how much we own;
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life’s actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?
