sally wheat gives us her 'perfect grays'

She is as sweet as she is talented.
Houston, Texas designer Sally Wheat recently took a little time to pass on to "a perfect gray" readers some of her favorite grays. And folks, we are not alone here in trying to sort out our gray hues, "I think grays are really hard," says Sally. "I've had a gray work beautifully in one end of a space and turn out completely blue on the other end!"

Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Here are a few of Sally's favorite grays, "I have had good luck with these," she says...

Sally's well known kitchen cabinets, above, are Benjamin Moore Fieldstone #1558

Pavilion Gray by Farrow and Ball, above, is
"...a nice light gray for walls," Sally notes.

Downpipe by Farrow and Ball, above,
is Sally's pick for a darker shade of gray.

And three Martin Senor colors that Sally recommends are:

Martin Senour Cindersmoke, above, "a nice dove gray."

Martin Senour Baby Hippo, on shelves, above.
Sally notes, "I have used Baby Hippo on built-in shelving and doors, very pretty."

Sally used Martin Senour Column, on the kitchen cabinetry, above,  for "a nice taupey gray."

Great suggestions from the creator of the "now famous" fabulous kitchen. I love the warm gray of her beautiful kitchen - I wasn't familiar with Martin Senour - clearly worth checking out!!

Those are all beautiful! Sadly I can relate with the blue end of the spectrum. The exterior of my house was supposed to be a lovely dark gray, and it definitely has a blue tint to it.

Thank you! This is really helpful because I am about to paint (obviously, with greys). I especially like the last greige-y one.

Sally's work is so lovely. I've also had great success with Farrow and Ball's Pavillion Gray. It's definitely my fave. Thanks Donna.

I have loved her kitchen for awhile and dreamt of a floor like that for 25 years but I had no idea that she was young and cute. I pictured her very differently-lol!
Pavilion gray is fabulous.

Yum for this post girls! A definite keeper!

I love the 'Fieldstone grey'. It reminds me of a colour we refer to as 'antique white' in my native Sweden. Such a versatile and beautiful colour!

The cabinets are heaven, as is the 'taupey gray' kitchen at the end. Love a good brick floor like that. My father and I nearly broke our backs laying one just like it in our Summer house in the very South of Sweden when I grew up. Hard work, but looks amazing!

Big hugs to you Donna.

xx C

I loved fieldstone in the pictures, but FB's James White seems to work in my space. Thought I would mention it, because I would not have picked it off the color card. Lighter than pavillion gray, in my room it is not as brown as clunch, or as yellow as slipper satin, it has green undertones, which the eastern (blue) light in my space seems to neutralize. Not a color I expected to work, so I thought I would mention it. Similar to morning dew (BM), but has that FB subtle depth!!

Thanks for sharing Sally's favorites!

After a year, we're still not sure which gray to use above our rock fireplace...maybe one of these will work! Love the name 'Baby Hippo', hope that one wins!

Just had my kitchen cabinets painted and wish I had been a little braver and gone with a different color...but repainting kitchen cabinets is not cheap so I had to go with white! Again!

Hi Donna, Just wondering if you could verify which paint Sally Wheat used on the "Brick house" kitchen cabinents. On the actual post with the house it says Owlet and on the post with Sallys favorite grays it says Column. Thanks for your help!-Katelyn

katelyn, sorry for the confusion. I just re-checked sally's e-mail to me and she states that the kitchen cabinets in the "brick house" are Martin Senour Column. Hope this helps and thanks for checking in.

Thanks for checking for me Donna!

Farrow and Ball does not make a Pavillion Gray. They call it Pavillion Blue and describe it as a pale blue color.
