Isn't that the truth! I have used Farrow & Ball's Pale Powder in 3 different rooms in 3 different ways and it always looks different! It even looks different from the swatch to the room view on their website!
Oh yes, lighting can make or break a room really! So important to test a wall paint or treatment of a major surface in daylight and artificial light before committing.
Isn't that crazy? I just spent six days painting my great room, entry and upper hallway. The ceilings are 21 feet high, yikes! It turned out great and I love the color. Like your photos it looks different as the light changes. Gray, green gray, brown gray. The good news, I love it in every light!
Gray is such an interesting color, and yes we are all indefinitely in search of the "perfect gray." haha, but I actually think the blue that in changes to matches the blues on the headboard, which can be nice!
I know! Debra from Acquired Objects and I have been laughing (crying) about this recently! I just posted a table I recently painted. It is Annie Sloan Graphite. It looks so perfect in my family room but in photos it looks blue-y! Gah!
My bedroom is painted gray, and I have this problem. The difference in my room isn't as pronounced, though. Maybe it's not exactly a problem because the room looks great in both lights.
You choose the most beautiful pictures! I adore your blog. You also raise a good point. Sometimes it's desirable that the color change in the shifting light of day and night. If not, there is a gray I like a lot, called "Sleigh Bells" from Benjamin Moore, that doesn't go violet, blue or green. It is a neutral medium gray that looks fantastic with glossy trim in Simply White.
Yes. I think we all know the change of the color gray depending on the light. But this is why this color is so exiting! Definitely one of my favorite and main color...for ever...in fashion... interior...and even gray skies can be ´blue´...
This room looks amazing in both lights... Blue/gray = blay! Or gray/blue = grue! BTW, we spell gray "grey". Strange, isn't it? Love, love that mirror above the bed, gorgeous. Have a great week, Tammy
Good find hun! But the problem is, that they both look so nice :) I'm a huge fan of playing with light to change the character and mood of a room. This is a great example. Stu http://whatwilsonwants.blogspot.com/
I finally found the PERFECT GREY!! I've been trying to find the perfect soft grey for over a year and had sample patches all over my walls. The problem was they all ended up looking too blue or purple. On the advice of a Benjamin Moore colour expert I reluctantly tried Benjamin Moore's COLLINGWOOD grey. I thought it was way too beige on the paint chip but it turned out to be the perfect soft grey on my walls! I still don't understand how it looks so different once it's on the walls but I love it!
My Gift Guides and Retail Therapy posts may contain some affiliate links. This means I may receive a small commission on sales thru this blog. Your cost is NOT affected. I only link to items which I would love to own or do already own. Any commission I earn allows me to keep up the gray goodness...so, thank you for your support! Donna

Yep one of my pet peeves with gray it changes color! But still love this bedroom. Enjoy your Monday Donna!
Hmm, that is a problem I would love to have. So beautiful either color!

exactly! which is why i went with Pigeon Gray from Dunn Edwards. it has a greenish cast but looks like putty on my walls.
doesn't seem like trouble to me
hahaha
blue or gray
love it either way
Ooooo good spot, donna! I like the grey more, but fun to see the way the light changes it to look more blue! Have a lovely week!
I actually think that's one of the most wonderful things about gray - but I'm a big fan of blue.
Responsive, quiet and with an element of surprise - not really a problem...

Love the first pic! Heaven!

P.S. thanks again for your super sweet email. xx
So true.....one has to be so darn careful when selecting! LMF.

Ha! It is the eternal gray conundrum but that room looks amazing in any light!

That is so crazy and SO TRUE about Grays. My living room paint color is the same way in different times of the day due to LIGHTING.
PS When you get a chance. You will have to come check my blog to see my new mudroom transformation. :) It's awesome! ;)

we're having the exact problem with our living room paint... in some light my beloved blue/grey looks a little too purpley.
Holy Moly, so THAT'S why i've had such a hard time picking a gray!

So true! Lighting makes all the difference!

Perplexing since the light reflection on the seat at the foot of the bed would indicate the photo was taken about the same time of day.
wow, big difference, but both gorgeous, lovin the golds and grays in first photo!
I had a bathroom which was painted a very pale grey, and the light, depending on time of day, totally shifted the color. It was fascinating!
What a STUNNING bedroom! LOVE!

My very reason for "grey" being one of my very favorite colors (not the muddy grey)
Blue, grey, lavenderish! All totally wonderful and soul-enhancing colors! You cannot go wrong!
The "purplish" is particularly intriguing!
when the walls change colors during the day; it is a good thing!!!
Did Math teachers teach differently? Why isn't everyone totally fascinated and loving how the colors change during the day? I don't get the downside!
Wow!!! Gorgeous!

Yes. Been there. Beautiful both ways!
Such a gorgeous bedroom regardless. But your right...that's a big problem with choosing the perfect gray. XO, Mona
I love how it changes color. It is my opinion there is no "perfect gray" for everywhere!
It depends on the room and the light! "Try "sample pots"!
It's funny how the feeling in the room changes a bit too! It goes from Belgian to French :)
The difference is amazing, isn't it? This is a beautiful room. I love the mirror over the bed.
I'm so happy to find and follow your lovely blog!

What a STUNNING bedroom! Love it. I love the mirror over the bed.
Amen, sister!
yes, but they are both beautiful:)
Donna, I shot that for Country Living. One of my fave shoots documenting Kirby Speas and her casually dramatic talents.I am glad you like.
Bravo! jane! What an amazing fabulous photo! Where else can we find that decorator!!??!!
One reason I LOVE Grey is that it changes colors.......I love that part the most of any of the hundreds of reasons to love grey!
Hey...
Looking too cool.. I really like these both are just awesome...
I am mad for this color...
thanks for sharing it with us...
I'd love to know what paint color does that--I'd be happy with either or both variants!
